Timeform Daily: Membership At Southwell Golf Club Handicap(6), Southwell, Friday March 27, 2.35

Ten go to post for this competitive five-furlong sprint. Timeform rate the runners.
Decider is an inconsistent front runner but is effective on fibresand and produced a good effort when second here to Argentine on his penultimate start.

Little Eden won on his debut over course and distance 12 months ago. He was runner-up in a Musselburgh handicap on his only other start. He goes well fresh, so the long absence is not necessarily a problem. Market should guide.

Whozart has been running quite well here of late. The return to the minimum distance should suit, and first-time blinkers could sharpen him up further.

Rocketball is still a maiden, and didn’t look altogether straightforward when fourth to Argentine over course and distance earlier this month.

Trinculo is not the force of old and his attitude makes him one to take on most of the time.

Argentine won for the first time since July 2006 over course and distance last time out, beating Decider by a neck. He is none too consistent and 3-lb higher, so is far from certain to follow up.

Spirit of Coniston is fully effective under conditions and his latest run when third to Argentine and Decider over course and distance was another fair effort.

Mujma shed his maiden tag at 17th time of asking over this trip at Lingfield last time. He acts on fibresand too, but is irresolute and 5-lb higher, so may have to settle for a place.

Tenacious is an ex-Italian mare who was fourth in a seller at Livorno on her only start in 2008.

Handsinthemist had been off for six months, but took well to fibresand when a neck second to Grimes Faith in a seller here on Sunday. She has every chance given a strict reproduction of that effort.  more

Can’t score since 9.03

Playing as Southampton, and ever since upgrading to 9.03, my players just can’t seem to get goals. My tactic seems to dominate games as it did before, yet none of my players can get goals. After every game I always seem to see the message that goes something like ‘Saints fans will be wondering how… more

10 Teams wanting Cutler

Despite the Broncos’ public intentions of keeping QB *Jay Cutler*, “more than 10″ teams have asked the team about the disgruntled quarterback, the Denver Post reported Friday (http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_11954932), citing an NFL source.

Cutler asked to be traded Sunday after a meeting with new coach *Josh McDaniels* and GM *Brian Xanders* didn’t put the quarterback at ease. He missed McDaniels’ first team meeting on Monday and didn’t show for the first week of offseason conditioning.
Despite the interest in Cutler, the Broncos seem intent on keeping him and smoothing things out. Team owner *Pat Bowlen* told NFL.com’s *Thomas George* (http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d80f54761&template=without-video-with-comments&confirm=true), “I would like to keep him here, obviously. But if you are going to be an unhappy camper, there is no real reason to be here.”
The Broncos are sure to receive more inquiries, the Post reported.
* A second NFL source said the Broncos remain optimistic about soothing the situation with their quarterback. Team officials do not want to give up on the tantalizing possibility of teaming Cutler’s enormous, if not fully developed, talent with a coach who coordinated a New England offense to an NFL-record 589 points in 2007.

* The Broncos would not be surprised if teams more aggressively pursue Cutler during the NFL owners meetings that begin Sunday in Dana Point, Calif.

Roy Williams talking with the Bengals

Five-time Pro Bowler and free agent S *Roy Williams* visited the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported (http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20090320/SPT02/903200405/1062/SPT).
The Bengals are a strong possible destination for Williams because he would have the opportunity to rejoin his former defensive coordinator with Dallas, *Mike Zimmer*, who now holds the same position in Cincinnati. Zimmer was pleased with Williams’ workout, he told the Enquirer.
* “It was a good workout. I wanted to evaluate him from when I remembered him,” Zimmer said. “He’s still got some quickness.” …

* During Zimmer’s tenure in Dallas, Williams flourished in a 4-3 defense, playing close to the line of scrimmage and establishing a reputation as one of the hardest hitters in the game. … After Zimmer departed and *Wade Phillips* replaced *Bill Parcells* as head coach, the Cowboys switched to a 3-4, in which Williams struggled. He had to play further off the line and was beaten routinely in coverage in the open field.

Williams had two years remaining on a five-year, $25.2 million extension with Dallas when he was released on March 6 (http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d80f18c06&template=without-video-with-comments&confirm=true). After starting every regular season game in his first five seasons in Dallas, Williams started 13 games and appeared in 15 in 2007. In 2008, he started just two games and appeared in three, tallying six tackles, no sacks and no interceptions.
In another potential roster move, the Bengals signed FB *Naufahu Tahi* to an offer sheet for one year and $1.4 million (http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20090320/SPT02/303200025/1066), with $500,000 guaranteed, the paper reported. Minnesota has seven days to match the offer if it wants to retain Tahi. more

The Punter: Forget Tiger and back Vijay to bounce back at Bay Hill

The Arnold Palmer invitational will doubtless be another thrilling event but for now the week’s most intriguing battle is being played out on the golf pages of Betting.Betfair as The Punter takes on Tiger and, in the process, a fellow columnist.
I seem to have gone completely overboard this week with loads of selections.

Most of them are at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, where in stark contrast to fellow columnist Paul Krishnamurty, I’m of the opinion that Tiger’s well worth taking on.

The world number one has a very good record at Bay Hill and he even won the event last year but in the three years prior to that he struggled. He’s not the only one though; Palmer has made a lot of changes to the course over the years.
When he edged out Bart Bryant 12 months ago with a monster putt after looking out of it for most of the final round, Tiger was in arguably the best form of his career, and was winning his fifth straight PGA event. I know he drove well at Doral two weeks ago, a key requirement here, but I think he’s at least a point too short and I’ve looked elsewhere.

My first pick is a big gamble; Vijay Singh must be devastated to be hindered by a knee injury after finishing last year so strongly. He hasn’t found any form since the surgery and even withdrew from last week’s event because of swelling on the offending knee but there’s no better place to bounce back than Bay Hill. His recent record here is outstanding and I’ve backed him at [38.0].

My other main selection is Kenny Perry, also backed at [38.0]. A bit like Tiger his form here isn’t brilliant lately. He followed his victory here in 2005 with a missed cut in 2007 and a 48th placed finish last year, but he’s in solid form this season. If he doesn’t sit up until the middle of the night watching basketball as he did last week, he could be bang in there come Sunday.

The others are too numerous to mention individually but they’re all players I’ve backed regularly and were just too big for me to resist.

Selections:

Vijay Singh @ [38.0]
Kenny Perry @ [38.0]
Stephen Ames @ [85.0]
Zach Johnson @ [85.0]
Jeev Milkha Singh @ [90.0]
Bart Bryant @ [120.0]
Ben Crane @ [180.0]
Will MacKenzie @ [420.0]

It took me a little while to suss that this week’s event in the Race to Dubai is to be staged at a different, yet mildly familiar venue.

This is the third staging of the Open de Andalucia, won last year by Thomas Levet, but it’s at a new venue this time, the Real Club de Golf de Sevilla, which was the venue for the 2004 Open de Sevilla, won by Ricardo Gonzalez and also for last year’s Open de Espana, won by Paul Lawrie. Confused? Yeah, I was for a while.

Anyway, my first pick is this week’s host, Miguel Angel Jimenez, who was playing like a winner here last year in the Open de Espana until two visits to the water on Sunday derailed him. I know he could get side-tracked handing out vol-a-vents and attending to other hosting duties, but he looked just a shade too big to be left out.

I’ve also backed Thomas Aiken, who his in a very rich vein of form. I thought his seventh last week in Madeira was an excellent effort after travelling back from the CA Championship, where he’d also finished seventh. I’m still not convinced by his mental fortitude at the business end of an event but felt he was worth a play at [44.0].

My final serious pick is Robert-Jan Derksen, who in his two appearances here has finished fourth and tenth. After that I’ve played some familiar faces at fun-sized prices. Most worthy of a mention is Daniel Vancsik, who I backed last week when he missed the cut, but he was coming back from a break and did manage to follow his first round 83 with a 69.

Selections:

Miguel Angel Jimenez @ [21.0]
Thomas Aiken @ [44.0]
Robert-Jan Derksen @ [50.0]
John Bickerton @ [170.0]
Miles Tunnicliff @ [270.0]
Daniel Vancsik @ [320.0]

As usually, I’ll post an update on Saturday morning. more
