French Open Daily Tips: Rogowska can confirm her promise with second Roland Garros win
Eighteen-year-old can continue on upward curve with a win against Bondarenko today, says Ben Caudell.
A second round thriller between wild card Josselin Ouanna of France and the legendary Marat Safin was the highlight of yesterday’s play.
This nail-biting encounter had everything a tennis fan could wish for. Safin, a 2002 Roland Garros semi finalist and two time Grand Slam Champion, rallied from two sets down to level the match, he then took an early break in the fifth before succumbing to the 134th-ranked Ouanna 7-6, 7-6, 4-6, 3-6, 10-8 in just under four hours and 34 minutes. This will be Safin’s last French Open as he will retire at the conclusion of the 2009 ATP Tour season, he will be sorely missed amongst all players and fans alike.
Today sees the conclusion of all second round matches including the number two and four seeded men, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic and the number two seeded female star Serena Williams.
Today’s Selections:
Kateryna Bondarenko (UKR) v Olivia Rogowska (AUS)
We could witness a star in the making today as 18-year-old Olvia Rogowska plays only her second ever Grand Slam match. After upsetting the odds in scincilating fashion by defeating her first round opponent Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 6-4, the Australian sensation will be looking to go further in her quest to break out of the ITF circuit and into the tennis elite with a win against against Keteryna Bondarenko.
Currently ranked 256 in the world but rising fast, Olivia has nothing to fear against a player already established amongst the top 50 ranked players. Her recent form reads won eight and lost two, albeit against lesser known players, however these matches were all played on clay and all wins were in straight sets.
At this year’s Australian Open she faced Kaeteryna’s older sister Alona Bondarenko and lost in three sets. I believe that especially in the womens gamethe more established players sometimes find it hard to play against the rising stars, fearing that they could one day be better! Therefore I think there is definitely value in backing the Australian starlet at the start of the match.
Selection: Back Olivia Rogowska @ [4.9] to win match; Lay Kateryna Bondarenko 2-0 @ [1.63].
Juan Monaco (ARG) v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA)
One of the day’s most promising encounters sees home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga take on Argentinean Juan Monaco it what promises to be a classic battle between two of the most watchable players on tour. Tsonga is fresh from his first victory at Roland Garros against compatriot Julien Benneteau, so will be full of confidence and eager to prove once more that he is not a walkover on the red stuff. Monaco has reached the last 16 at Roland Garros so is accustomed to the slower clay courts and ousted Fernando Verdasco back in 2006.
Monaco Is in great form, he will be playing this match on his favourite surface against a player whose recent form on the clay has been pretty poor. He has had recent wins over Marcos Baghdatis, Janko Tipsarevic, David Ferrer, and Marin Cilic, in comparison Tsonga’s best win on the dirt was against Safin.
I can see this match being a battle of power and wits, Monaco if he can maintain his consistent baseline play soaking up Tsongas power game forcing the Frenchman into errors than the Argentinean will win, if however Tsonga plays with the superior confidence he has shown in the past and plays to his very best capabilities than this match could swing either way.
Selection: Back Juan Monaco @ [1.81] to win match and @ [7.4] to win 3-2 (small bet)

Former Tide QB looking for opportunity with Falcons
Could Former Tide QB John Parker Wilson be the next starting QB for the Atlanta Falcons this up coming year right now he is fourth on the depth chart for the Atlanta Falcons but he waited all weekend to throw a pass to Tony Gonzalez. Before coach Mike Smith dismissed the team on the last day of Wilsons first NFL mini-camp, the former Alabama starting quarterback worked one-on-one with Gonzalez, the NFLs career-leading tight end. The drill Sunday afternoon was nearly over before it began. Wilson threw maybe four 10-yard passes on Gonzalezs hitch patterns, but the 23-year-old accomplished his goal. As an undrafted rookie free agent, hes just trying to get noticed.
John Parker Wilson said I feel really good, Im just coming in here trying to learn as much as I can right now. Take what I learn in the room and bring it out on the field. Because Wilson is listed fourth on the depth chart behind Matt Ryan, Chris Redman and D.J. Shockley, Wilson wasnt afforded a chance to work with an Atlanta receiving corps led by Gonzalez, Pro Bowl wideout Roddy White, Michael Jenkins, Harry Douglas and Brian Finneran. Most of Wilsons reps came with the third- and fourth-team offense, just two weeks after each of the leagues 32 teams decided not to draft him.
Though the majority of Alabamas fan base might disagree, Wilson understands that NFL teams didnt want him, either because they needed to use their draft picks on another position or they trusted their scouts assessments more than the quarterbacks ability to win games.
Sure, the Crimson Tide was unbeaten and ranked No. 1 before playing the Southeastern Conference title game five months ago, but Wilson knew scouts werent impressed with his arm strength.
Wilson went on to say I didnt really have any expectations going in. I wouldve liked to have been drafted, but ended up here, so Im happy, he said. I couldnt be more happy. The draft didnt work out, but Im here and trying to make the best of it. To me, hes a great guy to learn from every day, Wilson said. Hes just a tremendous quarterback. When I first got here, I didnt know what to expect, but hes a great guy. Very helpful. All the guys here are that way.
The Falcons also were coming off a disastrous 4-12 record that included the federal imprisonment of quarterback Michael Vick and the late-season resignation of first-year coach Bobby Petrino.
Ryan didnt earn the starting job until Atlanta entered its final exhibition game, but he showed surprising maturity for a rookie quarterback, helping Atlanta finish 11-5 and surprise the league by earning a wild-card playoff spot. White and running back Michael Turner joined Ryan as Pro Bowl selections.
Now that the Falcons fully upgraded the tight end position with Gonzalez, theyre apparently set with their starting personnel on offense.
Whats important for Wilson is that Smith, Mularkey and quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave will give Wilson a chance to beat out Redman and Shockley for the No. 2 job.
I dont think we have any question about whos our starter at quarterback, but John Parker has a very good understanding of the game, Smith said. Hes picked it up. Any time youre a rookie and playing the quarterback position, and youve got to take snaps and get in that huddle, its probably the most daunting thing that any football player has to do. Hes handled it extremely well.

[FOOTBALL] Jamie Carragher
After his horrific mistake against West Ham, it reminded me of what a liability he really is. More and more mistakes are creeping into his game at a point when he should be at his peak. I for one would have a partnership of Agger and Skrtel. more
Difference between console versions of Madden?
I’ve been playing Madden ’08 on the PSP here the last couple of days, and I noticed the game play seems a little more realistic with regards to both coverage and blocking than Madden ’09 on the XBox 360 which got me to wondering why the disparity.
What’s the difference between the console… more
