Old timers
In my game I’m managing Chelsea and about to start the 2013-2014 season. No one has retired yet, and three players in particular are really getting old. Lampard, Drogba and Carvalho are all 35, and will be 36 by the time their contracts run out. The thing is, they’re still good players, and they… more
QB Battles and Suprises
What QB situations are you expecting to shock people this offseason? How do you see the team situations working out as the season goes on?
The ones that’s I’ll be watching:
1. No one sees this as even a QB battle either. But I think the QB situation in Dallas is the one to watch this preseason. I think at this point that it’s Romo’s job to loose, but if Kitna puts in some good time durring the offseason, he may just shock the Cowboys nation. I also think that Jerry Jones has this in mind as well since the #1 this year in Dallas will be Roy Williams, who just happens to come from Detroit… Same as Kitna. They’ve got history, they’ve got familiarity, and they’ll have timing. If Romo drops balls like he did this year, by week 6-7 Kitna will get the nod, he he doesn’t before then.
2. The Brady situation. I’m very interested to see if Brady will come back at full capacity this year. He’ll have a lot of talent around him this year, some say more then he’s ever had thus far. He did have some infection soon after the operation, which may or may not indicate that things may not have gone as smothly in his recovery as they had originaly hoped, expected or be indicating at this time. It wouldn’t be the first time that the Pats underplayed a injury to Tom. So I’ll be interested to see how it plays out.
3. Because I’m biased. I’m very interested to see what happen in Tampa this year as far as QBs are concerned. At this time they have McCown as the favorite to take the lead (which I see as disasterous if that’s the case), but I think that if healthy Brian Greise, and Leftwich can both be front runners, with the coaching staff toying with the idea of getting Freeman some touches in preseason. It’s a three way competition with Freeman thrown into the mix just for kicks at this point…
4. Young vs. Collins… Collins was a feild general last year, having his best season in a long long time… If he can do it again, it’s his job, but the crew in Tennesse are going to be looking at Young in order to prevent him from being called a bust, which he’s already being called by many at this time.
5. Cutler vs. Orton… It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out and who’s going to have the better season this year. Cutler is the odds on favorite, but he’s going into a team that’s always favoured the run more so then the pass, plus he’ll be lacking any real weapons on offence. Orton on the other hand comes from a team that likes to run, into a team which still runs a lot, but will require him to throw a lot more often, but he will also have the better WRs to work with.
6. Sanchez vs. Stafford vs. Culpepper… It will be interesting to see who gets the start in Detroit this year. People are expecting, as they should, that Stafford getting that kind of money, will be the rookie starter for this season. If he wins this competition, it will then be interesting to see who then wins the battle between himself and Sanchez. Sanchez appears to be in a better situation in NY, having decent talent around him. Stafford on the other hand, can only been seen as an upgrade at best, BUT the team can only get better and some say that ANY wins they get this year will likely be lobbed onto his shoulders.
7. And the rest, the 49ers have Crabtree but lack any real starting QB, they got rid of JT O’Sullivan as though that were important. From there, there really isn’t anything to report at this time, but odds are, if Crabtree is half as good as people are saying he’s expected to be, he’ll end up making who ever starts there look better then they may actuely be. The Browns have Quinn and Anderson to choose from. Had this been last year, it would have been a big deal, this year, with the meager offence they’ve got it’s now only a matter of bragging rights between the two QBs in question. If Anderson gets it they won’t make the playoffs… If Quinn makes it, they won’t make the playoffs, so in the end it all comes down to wich QB they want to make look bad. Either they ruin what’s left of Anderson, ruining any chances of a decent trade. Or they do the same to a younger QB who thus far hasn’t really show us anything, again, ruining any chance of a good trade comming out of the situation. There’s a strong possibility that Pennington will go down with an injury this year, as he has nearly every single year of his career. It that happens, it will be interesting to see if Pat White gets the nod, and it so, at what capacity he’ll be able to fill the role of starting QB.
If I’m missing anything, please let me know… I’m finding this years QB situations to be pretty interesting and I’d hate to miss something important… And no, the Favre thing is not interesting in the least… At least not to me this time around. more

Jumps Racing future hangs in the balance
Victoria and South Australia are the only two remaining states, in Australia, that still feature jumps racing events. Last year, jumps racing was brought to a halt pending new recommendations in regard to the number of fatalities suffered by equine athletes, but now, the entire sport for these two states is hanging in the balance and depending the outcome, it could see the end of jumps racing in Australia altogether. Emotions ran high this week as Racing Victoria sat down to discuss the future of the sport. more
Ryan ten Doeschate: The adventure is over and its back to the drawing board
One of Holland’s star performers in the T20 World Cup tells us about mixed feelings towards the tournament, facing Shahid Afridi and returning to County duties with Essex.
Yesterday morning I was sitting in my hotel room before leaving for our massive game with Pakistan at Lord’s and I allowed my mind to wander.
If we could do something magic and reach the Super 8s we’d end up in the same group as Ireland, a fellow Associate member. If we could beat them early on and then get a game rained off we’d probably be in the Semi-Finals.
It was fanciful stuff but the format of the competition in the latter stages means one win and one rained off game could just be enough to put you through. Of course that is now the pipe-dream for Ireland. They now have a very tough group but at the same time they will be buzzing. For the departing Dutch squad, the emotions are much more mixed after the defeat to Pakistan. Our spirits were on a massive high going into yesterday’s game but, three hours later, we were out of the World Cup on the back of a pretty poor performance.
With the pressure of going through to the next round we did not quite play with the freedom we’d had against England on Friday. Our pursuit of their score and even a total of 151, which was the magic qualifying total for us, started quite slowly. Once I got to the wicket, we needed more than 10 an over. I could feel the dream slipping away but Pakistan bowled well, especially Shahid Afridi who basically took the game away from us with a spell of 4-11.
I have watched him on television and have thought about how he manages to get so many wickets. There is certainly an aura about him; he is both a big player for Pakistan and a big match player. You know he does not really turn the ball but he manages to consistently bowl a length that is so hard to get away. His bowling also has a nice loop to it and it rushes on to you so you can’t feel confident hitting him down the ground.
When I went out, I said to my batting partner that it wasn’t a day for knocking it around and getting 125. We needed to go for every ball because there was a real desire to get through. At least we fell short really going for it rather than just settling for a respectable score, which is what I’ve seen associate members do in the past.
After having been dangled the carrot of an extra week in this great competition, going out now leaves almost a bitter taste in the mouth. But the other guys missed out on even more of an adventure than I have in some ways. They fly back to Holland this afternoon whereas I head back to Essex where I start training on Friday.
Most of them are going back to their regular jobs. One of the guys summed it up by saying to me: \”At least you are playing at Hampshire next week, I am back at Voorburg CC\”. But we are getting better and if even there was ever a chance for Dutch cricket to go forward, it is now.
We will always have Friday night and there is a good vibe in the camp right now. The funny thing about sport is that when you get a taste of something it becomes like a drug to you. And our next opportunity is coming very soon. The Associate members’ qualification tournament for the next T20 World Cup takes place in Dubai in just four months time. It will be a tough task as only two teams go through.
So we have put aside our battles with the full members for now and go back to the drawing board to take on the Associates members once again.
