Banner stars for Ballydoyle
Starspangledbanner followed in his sire’s footsteps as the son of Australian champion Choisir blazed to victory in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Aidan O’Brien warned jockey Johnny Murtagh before his British debut at York last month that he would need a parachute to slow the four-year-old, such was his blistering speed.
And while he may have been beaten that day, the colt showed his true colours on the final day of the Royal meeting as he made all on the stands rail to take the six-furlong dash.
Murtagh stole an advantage breaking from his inside berth and was never headed as the 13-2 joint favourite blitzed his way to a length-and-three-quarter success from Society Rock and Kinsale King.
O’Brien said: “If he hit the gates the way we thought he could, then we knew it would be straightforward as there is no horse who can lead him. I have not seen the time of the race but can believe it is quick as he sets serious fractions at home.
“He worked coming here and did the second-last furlong in just over 9.5 seconds. We have never had that before and I have never seen a horse do less than 10 seconds. He is one of those very unusual beasts.
“He’s the fastest we’ve had, no doubt. We’ve never had one go that fast furlong by furlong. We will look forward to the July Cup, hopefully. He’s an incredible sprinter.”
Choisir landed the Golden Jubilee in 2003 and went on to finish second in the July Cup.
Murtagh added: “Aidan was very confident coming into this race. He told me just to jump him out and let him use that stride. Everything just worked perfect. He jumped well, travelled really well, a good strong gallop all the way.
“I sensed them coming to him at the two and when I let him go, he ran straight up the rail. He responded very well and went all the way to the line. I couldn’t pull him up. He’s a great horse. He’s very similar to his sire Choisir, big and strong.”

Full Monte for Johnston
Monterosso turned in an impressive display to land the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot for Mark Johnston and Frankie Dettori.
The 7-2 chance came into the race having won four of his last five starts and was sent to the front halfway up the straight, sweeping aside Derby runner-up At First Sight.
The result was never in doubt thereafter as the three-year-old excelled on this step up to a mile and half to pass the post two and a quarter lengths ahead of Arctic Cosmos, with Buzzword third.
Johnston said: “That day at Ripon when he won a handicap was the day we really saw the class. He was in an impossible position, but he won and we saw a good horse. It told us to start stepping up in class.
“You could see what a green horse we had then. He really didn’t know what his job was. He’s a completely different animal now.
“Frankie was full of confidence. He said to me he loved the horse and he had said after Newmarket he really didn’t think trip was an issue, that this horse had the speed for a mile but the aptitude for a mile and a half.
“We haven’t discussed plans. The owners need to be consulted and we’ll talk to them. I did hear Frankie mention the Irish Derby to Sheikh Mohammed, so that’s maybe something to think about.”
Dettori added: “I really like him. We stepped him up in distance, he keeps on improving and I thought it was a tremendous performance. Perhaps a pop at the Irish Derby could be on the cards. He’s still learning and that’s a good sign.”
The runner-up’s trainer John Gosden said: “It was a huge run and I’m really delighted. We’ll put him away now and bring him back for the St Leger. He could run in one of the trials or I could even look at a Listed race for him.”
Hib back to favourite course
Godolphin’s Hibaayeb attempts to recapture her juvenile form when she lines up for today’s Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot.
The filly was a Group One winner last season for Clive Brittain and after disappointing in the 1000 Guineas, bounced back to something like her true form when caught close home by subsequent French Oaks heroine Sarafina in the Prix Saint-Alary.
“Hibaayeb ran a good race to finish third in France and I think that a return to Ascot will suit her, having won a Group One at the course at the end of last season,” said trainer Saeed bin Suroor.
“I think the step up to a mile and a half will be no problem for her and she goes into Thursday’s race in really good form. I was pleased to see that Sarafina won so well in France at the weekend as that gives the form a boost and I’m really looking forward to running her over this trip.”
Eldalil takes a big leap up in class and distance but connections were left with little choice after the Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum filly was found to be under the weather subsequent to landing a Newmarket maiden in April.
“It’s a difficult one in that she’s only run the once this year. She won well at Newmarket and I was surprised she had the speed to win a seven-furlong maiden like that,” said Angus Gold, racing manager to the owner.
“Then her blood went wrong and we had to give her a break. We haven’t had time to get another run into her which is a pity as it would have been nice to go for a mile-and-a-quarter Listed race to see if we were on the right track.
“Her pedigree certainly says she will stay. She is a nice filly, but whether she can make the jump up on this next start from a seven-furlong maiden to a mile and a half Group Two is a big ask. We’ll see what happens.”

Cliffs peaks in Palace stroll
Richard Hannon dominated the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot as Canford Cliffs oozed class to get the better of his stablemate Dick Turpin.
The winner was settled some way off the pace by a confident Richard Hughes, who held on to the 11-4 joint-favourite for as long as possible as Steinbeck led into the turn.
Dick Turpin went for home, but Canford Cliffs quickened up impressively to go past and win by a length, with Pat Eddery’s Hearts Of Fire running a massive race in third.
Hughes said: “The most important thing I had to do was to get my horse to settle very early in the race, slip the bridle out and ride him a race.
“I said all week I knew I was on the best horse, but I just needed a bit of luck in running.
“I could afford to give them five lengths riding on a horse like Canford Cliffs, but I could feel a shoe go turning for home and that was a bit of a worry.
“He just might have hit a flat spot and I soon got him going again and he’s beaten a very good horse in Dick Turpin too.
“Being on him is like getting into a Rolls Royce instead of a Morris Minor. The difference is unbelievable. You just sit on him and everything is smooth and is electric. He has so much speed and that’s his forte.”
Hannon added: “He’s got better and better and he only had to settle in his races. He has got to go for Group Ones, so I suppose the Sussex Stakes and the Jacques le Marois would be possibilities.”
Makfi, winner of the 2000 Guineas, was only seventh of the nine and his jockey Olivier Peslier reported: “He was running a good race until turning into the straight. I tried to go on the outside but there was no power – he found nothing.”

Goldi primed for Anne assault
Freddie Head has fired an ominous warning shot at Goldikova’s Queen Anne Stakes rivals by declaring his star mare to be in the form of her life.
Tuesday’s Royal Ascot curtain-raiser promises to be the race of the meeting with Goldikova being joined by brilliant Lockinge winner Paco Boy and dual Group One winner Rip Van Winkle, and Head’s five-year-old already has eight Group One successes to her credit.
The handler said: “She is in very good form and has arrived at Ascot. She travelled very well and we are looking forward to a very good race. I think she has improved since her first run of the year at Longchamp and she always does improve for her first run.”
He added: “The ground is going to be fast I hope and she loves a straight course, so I hope and think we can win. She is very well and I think she is better than ever.”
Rip Van Winkle has his first start since finishing down the field in the Breeders’ Cup Classic but he had previously won the Sussex Stakes and the QEII as well as finishing just a length behind wonder-horse Sea The Stars in the Coral-Eclipse.
His trainer Aidan O’Brien told At The Races: “He’s in good form but this is his first run of the season and we are a little bit worried as a lot of our horses have improved from their first run to their second run and their second run to their third.
“He’s as well as we could have him, but obviously it is a big championship race and ideally you would like to be going into it having got a run into him. We are very happy with him and he’s done very well since last year.
“He’s a stronger horse this year and you’re never sure until they run, but he’s been showing us all the right signs.
“Paco Boy and Goldikova are two exceptional horses and it’s a great race for everybody to look forward to.”
