Richard Hannon picked up another big juvenile prize when Libranno pinged out of the stalls and made all the running under Richard Hughes to take the Tanqueray Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Enjoying his sixth success of the week, Hughes had to wake up the youngster inside the final furlong to score by one and a quarter lengths from The Paddyman in the Group Two contest.

The latter had been well-backed at 4-1 and looked menacing with two furlongs remaining, but Libranno found plenty in front, to the delight of the packed grandstands, returning as a warm 5-4 favourite.

Hughes said: “I was trying to get him to relax and get him breathing early on, as for nearly a minute I couldn’t feel his belly going. He jumped extremely fast and I let him go to the front, but in the last two furlongs he was gawping at everything.

“I think he kills horses off halfway through the race with his speed and then just grinds it out at the finish. He had a hard race the last day and a tough enough race today, but he’s a decent horse and a fast horse.”

When asked about a potential next port of call for the juvenile, Hughes added: “Ideally something like the Prix Morny, but that might come a bit quick for him.”

Hannon said: “We took him to Newmarket very raw, but we still thought he’d have a good chance in the July Stakes, and he’s won very well again today.

“I don’t really know what we’re going to do with him now. It’s up to the owner really, but he wouldn’t want much further than six furlongs unless we can teach him to race in a different way.”

Hughes went on to notch his 100th winner of the season, and effectively wrapped up the Goodwood jockeys’ title, as he rode The Queen’s Royal Exchange (3-1 joint-favourite) to victory in the RSA Nursery.

Winning trainer Hannon added: “It’s great for Hughesie and for Her Majesty. This horse wants a mile really.”

Ed McMahon believes the weight concessions Astrophysical Jet receives in Thursday’s Audi King George Stakes at Goodwood could prove vital.

The three-year-old filly finally lived up to her home reputation when waltzing away with a handicap at Newmarket’s July meeting.

“I’ve always held her in high regard and because she’s rated 101 now there’s a lack of opportunities so while we haven’t been backed into a corner, I thought we may as well take a chance. Because of the weight-for-age and fillies’ allowance she’s getting a good deal of weight off most of the field,” said McMahon.

“We don’t know if the track will suit, the stiff five at Newmarket seemed to, but this is a completely different race. She’s going from a handicap up to a Group Two but it was the way she did it.

“The Group Two sprinters are all much of a muchness and I think it is horses like her which are unexposed that are harder to put a line through.”

Harbinger has powered his way to the title of top-rated racehorse in the world thanks to his breathtaking performance in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Racing’s official assessors had no problem in raising the Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt forward from a mark of 123 to 135 following his 11-length romp in Ascot’s midsummer showpiece on Saturday.

“You’ve got to be very impressed. He looked an improving colt before the race,” Phil Smith, the British Horseracing Authority’s head of handicapping, told At The Races.

“All his performances this year were very progressive and I expected him to a run a big race. I didn’t think he’d win and I certainly didn’t think he’d win like that.

“We looked at the second horse, Cape Blanco, and imagined what if Harbinger had not been in the race. Cape Blanco was 119 going into the race and so we took the view that Cape Blanco had replicated his 119.

“We therefore just had to decide what we called the 11 lengths. We took the view that was worth 16lb, which would be pretty much the norm and brings Harbinger out on 135.

“It’s quite a big jump – we had him on 123 before that – but I’m pretty confident he’s that and could probably be better. It was very impressive.”

He went on: “Instantly we’ve got Harbinger 1lb below Sea The Stars’ end-of-season performance (in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe). He has still got one, two or possibly three more races to come, so we will see how he runs in his subsequent races.

“It may well be we have him as high or higher than Sea The Stars. He’s the best horse in the world today, definitely, but he’s not the best horse ever. He’s got a hell of a lot to prove.

“It was a once performance. No-one could get any of his previous performances into the 130s, even though he looked to be climbing the ladder. We would want him to do it again before we can get him into the late 130s or early 140s. He’s got to do something similar in the future.”
