Horseracing Betting Briefing May 31 - June 6: Epsom tests punters mettle

Andrew Hughes marks your card for a week which includes a showcase for Europe’s finest sprinters, future stars at Naas and culminates in the 2009 Epsom Derby. Will Johnny Murtagh choose Fame and Glory?
Sunday May 31st

Chantilly

2:30 Prix de Sandringham

A Group Two mile for three-year-olds that tends to attract fillies who have not quite lived up to their trainers’ Guineas ambitions.

3:05 Grand Prix de Chantilly

One of the better middle distance Group races around, with entrants here offering plenty of top class form for punters to study. Winners of this race are often aimed at the prestigious Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

3:40 Prix du Gros Chene

Named after a large oak tree that once stood on this most idyllic of courses, the third Group race of the day is a five furlong dash showcasing some of Europe’s best sprinters.

Monday June 1st

Naas

3:40 Naas Sprint Stakes

A Listed event for sprinters just below top class that usually draws a fair sized field.

4:40 Coolmore Stud Fillies’ Sprint Stakes

Worth watching this Group Three for two-year-old fillies closely for future stars with last year’s winner Cus Ghaire going on to finish runner up in the 1000 Guineas.

Windsor

7:55 Leisure Stakes

A similar event to the earlier race in Naas, this evening sprint is likely to attract an even bigger field and is competitive for its class.

Thursday June 4th

Leopardstown

7:00 Ballyogan Stakes

A Group Three sprint for fillies and mares in which British raiders have a good record though punters won’t have it easy trying to weigh up the form of these unexposed or disappointing animals.

8:30 Glencairn Stakes

A Listed mile event that shouldn’t take much winning but the small field can lead to an uncertain pace and an unpredictable outcome.

Friday June 5th

Epsom

1:40 Diomed Stakes

This Group 3 over an extended mile is often not more than Listed class and likely to feature some thoroughly exposed sorts. As ever at Epsom, the ability to handle the unique gradients is the key.

2:45 Coronation Cup

This is a mouth-watering clash of Classic contenders from years past and should be one of the more straightforward races for punters to study this meeting.

3:25 Heritage Handicap

A 10 furlong scramble featuring a big field that is likely to be highly competitive and a thorough test of punters’ mettle.

4:05 Oaks

Michael Bell’s Sariska, impressive winner of the Musidora Stakes is the current antepost favourite for this fillies Classic on [4.4] but John Gosden’s Rainbow View is fancied at [5.2] as is Henry Cecil’s Midday, currently around the [6.4] mark.

Goodwood

7:20 Tapster Stakes

Obviously overshadowed by events at Epsom, but this Listed contest over a mile and a half is worth looking at if you have the chance and could feature some promising and possibly underrated types.

Saturday June 6th

Epsom

1:25 Sir Clement Freud Memorial Stakes

Appropriately renamed to commemorate the great man, this 10 furlong Heritage handicap is usually fiercely contested. Punters should be on the lookout for rail alterations from the first day.

1:55 Woodcote Stakes

A Listed contest for two-year-olds that is a tricky one to unravel, partly because you can’t be sure how these youngsters will take to the quirky course and partly because many of them will be unexposed.

2:25 Princess Elizabeth Stakes

A Group Three for fillies and mares run over the extended mile. It hasn’t always lived up to its status but it represents a good punting race with most of the horses on show having plenty of form in the book.

3:00 Investec ‘Dash’

A big field cavalry charge down the fastest sprint course in the country, this valuable event is quite a spectacle and though it will take some work to unravel, handicap lovers will be in their element.

3:45 Derby

Irish horses have dominated the antepost market this year. In choosing his Derby mount, Johnny Murtagh has a tricky decision to make between favourite Fame And Glory and his Ballydoyle stablemate Rip Van Winkle. John Oxx’s 2000 Guineas winner Sea The Stars also has his supporters and if he were to win, he would be the first horse since Nashwan to do the Classic double.  more

Did one of you successfully told a player to drop out one of his prefered move ?

Question about future rosters

I was wondering what’s going to happen with the living rosters option, or NBA Live 09’s 365 feature, after the draft. I mean after the rookies come out, are they going to update all the teams with the new rookies every week? The new game only comes out probably end of October 09, so for 3-4 months… more

Britains Got Talent Betting: Can these three bears provide a dream night for punters?

It’s the last of the semi-finals tonight, and our Britain’s Got Talent fan \”Mystical\” Mike Norman expects an intriguing battle between some weird and wonderful acts - something for everyone as they say…
You know, sometimes you just have to admit when you were wrong… and yesterday I was wrong… quite spectacularly in fact.

Having tipped up Callum Francis to win last night’s heat of Britain’s Got Talent I was quite delighted to see him perform brilliantly, and subsequently receive great comments from the three judges. What I hadn’t counted on was saxophonist Julian Smith and family duo 2 Grand putting in faultless, and in the latter’s case, sincere and tear-jerking performances.

Whilst I expected Smith to do well and qualify with ease, it was the impact that 2 Grand left on me that has prompted me into making a groveling apology.

A few weeks back I made reference to 2 Grand, saying that John (that’s the elderly half of the act) would be watching the final from his living room whilst chomping through a few ounces of liquorice allsorts.

Even yesterday I said that any votes this grandfather/granddaughter singing act polled would surely be emotional or sentimental ones. How wrong could I have been? I was totally dismissive of their talent, and yes, whilst there is an element of emotion and sentiment to what they do, at the end of the day they do it fantastically well and entertain immensely. They deserved to go through last night, because for me, they were the stars of the show. I for one never thought I’d be saying that!

In the Britain’s Got Talent winner Market, Susan Boyle is on the slide amidst reports that this church-going super talent is buckling under the pressure of fame. She can now be backed at [2.36] to win Saturday’s final, ahead of Aidan Davis ([8.8]), Shaheen Jafargholi ([9.2]), Stavros Flatly ([10.0]), Flawless ([13.5]), Julian Smith ([16.5]), and Diversity ([18.0]). A full preview (with a bit of humour) of tomorrow’s final will be on site first thing in the morning.

Tonight’s concluding semi-final promises to be an intriguing one, with at least four acts capable of reaching the final itself.

The Public Vote Winner Market has cool break-dancer Aidan Davis as the hot [1.35] favourite, and I agree that he is the most likely winner. However, there are at least three other decent performers tonight in the shape of 10-year-old singer/dancer Hollie Steel ([6.6]), the uniquely sounding Greg Pritchard ([9.0]), and the all-singing family Good Evans ([19.5]).

Pritchard could easily be the surprise of the evening. His audition had even Simon Cowell dumfounded when he sang Nessum Dorma in a high soprano singing voice - great if he were female, but Pritchard is male and his act is completely unique, and mesmerising

Greg Pritchard is available to back at [3.55] in the To Qualify market, and I personally hope he makes it ahead of Hollie Steel ([1.8]) and Good Evans ([4.0]).

Perhaps the most amusing act of tonight’s show will be The Dream Bears. This trio of… how can I put this… ‘dancers who have certainly performed in front of a few queens before’ were incredibly fun to watch during their audition. I have a feeling they will up their game tonight and provide a bit of a shock factor as well as being hugely entertaining. I can’t see them getting through to the final, but at [60.0] just To Qualify, you will do a lot worse.
