And finally for an item wholly unusual — The particular Compound Bow
And finally for something 100 % special — The Compound Bow
Imagine how much damage Robin Hood could have made to the Sheriff of Nottingham if hed been in possession of a compound bow. However unlikely that may be (they werent actually designed until the 1960s) it would certainly have made interesting reading. Robin Hood, however, so the story goes, didnt need the increased accuracy of a compound bow, as we are led to believe that he seldom missed whatever he was aiming at.
On first sight, a compound bow really might not look much like anything youll have seen before. The design is a million miles from the traditional bows and arrows that the long suffering Indians used against the cowboys, instead of being a bit of wood with a string attached they have a series of wheels, pulleys and cams. In fact, compound archery would be just about impossible without the help of these gadgets, you simply wouldnt have the strength to pull the string back.
The cam on the compound bow means that the archer can pull back a string with much more weight, giving the arrow more speed and allowing it to fly much flatter through the air. The arrow can then not only fly further, but modern compound archery is also much more accurate than those using traditional bows.
First designed in the 1960s, as with many other things the compound bow has seen lots of development over the last few decades and these more modern designs are generally used in todays competitions. With a wide selection of makes to choose from, pse compound bows, bowtech compound bows and mathews compound bows to mention just a sample, an experienced archer could help you to find something suitable no matter what your age or size.
You might be pleasantly surprised at just how lightweight the compound bow is for its remarkable strength, and with the addition of an advanced sights system the modern sportsmen or women engaged in the sport of compound archery can hit the centre of the target time after time. This is even achievable when the target appears to be no larger than a spot on the horizon.
Little wonder then, that compound archer is starting to become so popular, but be warned, you wont be able to practice shooting at a cardboard box in the back garden; you need lots of space to let those arrows fly. After all, a compound bow can be extremely dangerous if not used with extreme caution.
