Damika edges Ripon thriller
Damika gave the Yorkshire crowd something to cheer about by lifting the William Hill Great St Wilfrid Handicap at Ripon, beating hot favourite Tajneed in the process.
Trained just down the road at Scarcroft, near Leeds, by Richard Whitaker, the seven-year-old was given a cool ride by young Michael Stainton
Tajneed was to the fore throughout on the favoured far side, but he never quite shook off the attentions of his pursuers and though he kept finding more, Damika (18-1) came with a sustained run to win by a neck.
Signor Peltro was a further three-quarters of a length away in third, with Rileyskeepingfaith placed in yet another big sprint in fourth.
Whitaker said: “To win a big race on your doorstep is great, it means so much more.
“I quite fancied him. He ran well last time but the ground was too fast. I was doing a rain dance last night and it worked. We’ll head for the Ayr Gold Cup now.”
Stainton added: “I gradually built him up and he always finds something. He’s raced against Tajneed plenty, so he deserved his day. This is my biggest win and I’ll celebrate it tonight.”
