If you’re heading to Florida and enjoy kayaking, make sure to find the Ten thousand Islands on the southwestern tip of the state. Here you will enjoy the many wonders of the Everglades This tropical location is one of the greatest US destinations for paddling! Located near the southwestern tip of the state one can enjoy a wide variety of local and exotic animals such as Alligators and tropical birds. This area also holds many rare tropical trees not found anywhere else in the US like Rainbow Eucalyptus and Plumeria. After a little sight seeing its time to get out for some exciting Florida everglades kayaking.

The name “Ten Thousand Islands” is actually a bit deceptive, you will find hundreds of islands in the area, but many aren’t suitable for pulling up the kayak and lying out on the beach for a break. There are a few islands, however, such as Tiger Key that have, over time, built up a sandy beach. So even though the name suggest thousands of islands, there are really only a few hundred or so, most being unusable.

Top-notch navigation skills are a must for this trip. This is an area filled with channels, bays and creeks that can easily get you lost and confused. Get a waterproof NOAA marine chart before leaving out on this Everglades kayaking trip. Don’t consider carrying anything other than a waterproof chart. Of course, you will want a compass to make sure you can get back on the right path if something happens. You would do well to have the navigational backup of a GPS unit as well. This might seem silly to some but, please be sure you know how to use these tools before heading out on a tricky paddle like this.

A great place to start your first Florida everglades kayaking activity is at Chokoloskee Island. This is a laid back, quiet island with tons of fish from Redfish and Snook to Tarpon and Catfish. Along with that selection is a wide selection of opportunities for kayaking and canoeing. You can even take trips on the water that last more than one day.

You are heading into a sub-tropical environment that could have some risks. Don’t go into this thinking you are going to play with Mickey Mouse at Disneyland. Protect yourself from the intense sun and the many mosquitoes by wearing longer pants and shirts, hats, and of course a good sunscreen. Since all the water in the area is saltwater, all you will have access to is what you bring with you. Everyone coming on your trip will need to bring a gallon of water per day spent in the area. Make sure to bring at least a gallon of water per person for every day that you plan on spending in this area of the Everglades. All the water in the area is saltwater, so even the raccoons are dying of thirst! They will chew holes through your bottles to get to the freshwater, so make sure to protect them at all times.

Other than winter months, sand flies and mosquitoes can be just as big of pests as the raccoons. Take lots of insect repellent. Be sure your mosquito netting bars the tiny sand flies as well as mosquitoes. If you go in the winter, this may not be as big of a concern.

As you probably know, canoeing and kayaking can be challenging and physically exerting at times.The Ten Thousands Islands is an exciting place to visit if you have those navigational skills and come prepared for the physical exertion of Everglades kayaking. Get in shape and get ready to enjoy the wilds of Florida!
