UK SP10 Winners
On the last Sunday before Christmas the annual Sports Personality awards were held in London attracting high profile celeb guests. In a year that could not be described as one of the best in British sporting history, some unknowns and rank outsiders managed to make their way into the nominations among a few firm favourites. The nominations were as follows:
Mark Cavendish
Jessica Ennis
AP McCoy
Graeme Swann
Lee Westwood
Tom Daley
David Haye
Graeme McDowell
Phil Taylor
Amy Williams
BMW 3 Series (only joking!)
Speculation was rife before the awards and the firm favourite was widely recognised as Lee Westwood, who hit the top of the World Golf rankings this year, just like leasing cars is sure to become the most popular way of financing a brand new car. Jessica Ennis narrowly missed out in last years award and having had another impressive year, was hoping for a victory on her second attempt.
In my mind, David Haye deserve the award, the Boxer from London is the full package, a great sportsmen, humble, articulate and a real crowd pleaser. He certainly wont need cheap vans after all the prize money hes won this year! the first darts player to be nominated for some time, Phil the Power Taylor was a true crowd favourite and crowd pleaser who ended up taking the runners up award.
Tom Daley is now a household name, a staggering achievement for such a young star competing in a fringe interest sport, he took another two golds in the Commonwealth games in Dheli to add to his already huge collection.
David Beckham won the lifetime award, having first scooped a SP going in 2001, while Sir Frank Williams was awarded the Helen Rollason award for outstanding achievement in the face of adversity. AP McCoY was by all admissions, a rank outsider, but his victory in the 2010 Grand National was enough to cement his position among sporting greatsth attempt on his trusty steed Dont Push it
