Utilize the Golf Pre-Shot Routine for Setting You Up for Success
The few seconds from the time you tee up the ball, or come up to the ball in the fairway, and actually strike it will probably determine how successful the golf shot will be. Will that be a time while those mental demons creep in, making you lose focus? By utilizing your pre-shot routine that is tailored for your requirements, there’ll only be time to concentrate on the job at hand. So why does each good golfer have an efficient pre-shot routine as part of his Golf Swing Basics? For the reason that it works!
Essentially, your pre-shot routine is really a sequence of checkpoints, thoughts, actions, and attention to details prior to hitting a golf shot. It must be unique to every golfer, and it’s best if it fits the golfer’s character. In other words, if a person throughout his every day routine moves through life in warp-speed, he wouldn’t use a deliberate, meticulous routine. Similarly, should you be a more deliberate person, that slower routine may fit your needs better.
So what may your pre-shot routine look like? Since I can simply stress its significance and what components go into it, I can’t state what’s best for you. So I will describe what I employ previous to each golf shot, and maybe you’ll draw a few ideas.
1. Before I select a club, I stand behind the ball and create in my mind the golf shot. This doesn’t mean merely yardage. I consider wind direction and intensity, the way the ball is carrying that day, how I’ve been striking the ball, and I leave a margin for error away from problem areas.
2. Select a club. Regardless of whether I had already pre-decided my club prior to visualizing my golf shot, I always bring a couple of, and occasionally three, additional golf clubs with me. Should I change my mind after deciding the proper golf shot, attempting to hit that golf shot with a club I’m uncomfortable with will almost definitely wind up poorly. That is the most important reason why I always choose to walk the course whenever doable; all your tools will always be there with you.
3. Choose your target area. I do this from behind the ball, and then I align a spot about five feet on line and in front of the ball. That’s where I will establish my stance and position my clubface toward. I’ve found in the course of my experience that this gives me a more consistent set-up with the target area.
4. Before I set my feet, I locate the club on the precise location I want it to strike the ball. I do know that if anything mechanical becomes amiss during my swing, much can be corrected if I strike the ball properly. Then I set my left foot to the ball, after that my back foot.
5. Then after one last look toward the target area, to prompt the swing (I think this is essential) I to some extent push the hands forward previous to drawing the club in the backswing. This “activate mechanism” provides a consistent starting point to begin the swing.
