What About The Kentucky Derby?

At the Kentucky Derby, you might like hearing the names of the horses, like Watch Me Go, Pants On Fire and Stay Thirsty, more than the true horse event. Imagine lounging in the grandstands and listening to the name of this year’s champion Animal Kingdom by a nose. Folks had to laugh, even if they didn’t win.

There is also a lot of excitement at the pre-race carnival, also. It begins the 14 days prior to the race. Each year, there is a fireworks show where all can lounge in the meadow, your auto or inside the stadium bleachers and watch the wonderous display twinkle in the night sky. Days following have lots of fun and athletics, including basketball, soccer, volleyball and baseball. Do not fail to head back to the grandstands to enjoy some of the great musical events. These music events are always playing. All kinds of music to choose from, they have jazz to rock and country to classical.

Also, there is a contest which is the only one to include racing riverboats; the Great Steamboat Races. Almost everything is free and there is continuously something to do. There honestly is something for anyone, from proper dances to barn yard dances and all in between. So come up and have a good time.

The greatest thing at the races are in the sport of viewing the women enter the grandstands. What’s this about? Well, it is all about the hats.

There were more caps than at Prince William’s wedding. Jennifer Tilly, known for her acting and voice over jobs, began the procession with what seemed like a boa on top of a plum colored saucer . Next there was sports journalist and “Dancing with the Stars” alumnus Erin Andrews, whose hat was so enormous she looked like she had trouble keeping her head up. And let us not forget “Kate Plus8” celeb-mom Kate Gosling who seemed to have a lamp shade plastered in feathers upside-down upon her head. Finally, the reality wannabe actress Aubrey O’Day, who was trying her best to look sophisticated in a way-too-busy black and white clutter on top of her head that incorporated too many bows.

After the parade of celebrities enters the grandstands at Churchill Downs, then and only then, are the rest of us allowed to view the race itself. [Yes, folks come to bet, play games and see the horses gallop from the grandstands, but the best show is the odd hats and odder celebrities that show up. Wonder what will happen next race.
