Quick Redux was nicely placed to string together wins. He did not climb the class ladder like many horses do. As an alternative he was carefully placed in starter allowance races of a consistent level of quality. In addition, the field size in his last 10 races was an average of 6 horses, with the largest being just 8. With his record-breaking run, the field size was just 4 horses total.

All this is just to assert that his owners and trainer selected his races well. Winning them was another matter. Heavy favorites lose with regularity, even in tiny fields. Just remaining healthy enough to race so frequently is a huge challenge at any level of racing. So credit is due for winning so many in a row. He beat the percentages, even though he did not beat particularly good horses.

It is worth pointing out that Quick Redux has won at many alternative distances and over many different courses. To his credit he has won over off tracks as well as fast tracks. His style isn't particularly flexible, always taking to the lead early. In fresh form, he hasn’t passed lots of other horses.

The most outstanding thing about Citation’s record was that he raced so often in a single year in such good company, let alone won so many of them. Horses of that caliber just don’t race as often as they use to. Think about this “Citation basically snuck a race in between the Preakness and the Belmont on his way to a Triple Crown victory. Are you teasing me? Grade I winners have much more time to recover between races these days. It is sensible that his single season win record would eventually fall to a much cheaper pony.

But Rapid Redux is not of Citation’s quality. Matched against Citation or Zenyatta, Rapid Redux is an especially slow race pony. You will not see him holding track records along with his win streak record.

My hat is off to Fast Redux. There shouldn't be any asterisks next to his record smashing run. His accomplishments don't place him in the same company as Zenyatta or Citation, but they're provoking just the same.

It’s not surprising because the owners of these web sites were huge sponsors especially Poker Stars and Full Tilt Poker. If you have been watching the tournament on television you will see their logos are not on the players either. Even the UFC events don’t have these sponsors anymore. If ratings are down this year they can lose even more sponsors. A good thing is Godaddy has signed on this year to become a sponsor and maybe that is a good sign.

The bottom line is next year will be the year to worry about. If poker players cant find online poker sites that accept players from the US, then they could lose interest and take up different hobbies. Even if their desire is to play, but there’s no place online, they may get frustrated. In either case the lack of US poker Sites is a concern and the fact these players have never had there funds returned to them is yet another. The environment over the next year can really get bad.

So how can we fix it and keep the best tournament in the world? That certainly will not be an easy one. Here are some thoughts. First, if the government is prosecuting the operators of these poker sites criminally, then they should also pursue the funds being returned to the players just as vigorously. The poker players were not breaking any laws and their funds should be returned. Second, there must be a law that legalizes online poker at the minimum if not all of gambling. The law makers should not play politics with this situation. It’s about time to get past the Indian gaming lobby and help the players. Until we get US poker sites again the game is in trouble and so is the WSOP.
